O HOLY GHOST INFLAME OUR HEARTS

1. O Holy Ghost inflame our hearts

Set them afire with love divine

Pour forth anew thine unction sweet,

And make these lowly dwellings thine.

2. O Light of God’s unending day,

shine truth into the clouded mind,

disperse the darkest night of sin,

give sight unto us wand’ring blind.

3. O Wind that blew upon the deep,

breath of God’s own creative love,

blow down, remake us all anew,

bind us to Christ who reigns above.

4. O Dove who on the Jordan’s banks

rested upon the Saviour’s brow,

rest too upon God’s children here,

heal, sanctify, and cleanse us now.

5. O Rushing Wind of Pentecost,

O Fire of Love from Christ’s own side,

burn still and set Christ’s Church aflame,

that we might all in peace abide.

6. O make us into living stones,

from which the Church of God is made,

laid down upon the Word of Christ,

the corner stone on which we’re laid.

7. O Praise the Blessed Trinity,

cry out to God with all thy soul,

the Spirit groaning in thy depths,

shall sanctify and make thee whole! Amen.

Musical Settings

This hymn was written in Long Metre so fits a great variety of tunes. Rockingham is the preferred tune, for a quieter and more meditative approach - ideal for Communion or the Offertory, and the Old Hundredth for a stronger and more robust version as an Entrance or Recessional Hymn. I have also created a pdf (below) of the hymn set to the traditional Latin tune 'Veni Creator Spiritus' - recommended for choirs (especially male voice choirs) singing without the congregation. This version, or the Rockingham version, would be ideal for the Divine Office.
